Become a member today We cannot hope to obtain a second airfield for Canberra unless members of the aviation community are prepared to join our organisation. Becoming a member now may entitle you to certain privileges, for example, early access to hangar space, at our new airfield. Details on any such privileges will be outlined in occasional emails to members as the project evolves.
The Canberra Region Aviators Association aims to establish an airfield in close proximity to Canberra that is suitable for recreational aviators of all kinds. This includes aviators who fly under the auspices of general aviation, Recreational Aviation Australia and the Gliding Federation of Australia amongst others.
In response to growing demand from local aviators the Canberra Region Aviators Association Inc. (CRAA) was recently formed to pursue this goal.
In recent years the traffic at Canberra’s only aviation facility, Canberra International Airport, has been growing to the point that it is becoming difficult to operate smaller aircraft in an economically feasible manner. Circuit times of 10 – 12 minutes are not uncommon and holding times both in the air and on the ground can be long and tiresome. CRAA recognises the commercial interests of the airport lie with larger, scheduled services and notes that general aviation is as much of a burden on their operations as the delays are on ours. With this in mind the goal of setting up a smaller, non-competing airfield accessible by all flyers, including those without controlled airspace privileges, was established. This airfield will complement the larger facility and relieve the pressures on all Canberra aviation operations.
The field will cater for a range of aviators whose primary focus is flying for non-commercial purposes. These include those starting out in aviation and taking their very first flights through to retired airline captains wishing to get back into real stick and rudder flying. In order to achieve the goals of bringing these aviators together in the Canberra region the CRAA needs your help.
Working together with the community, aviators from all walks and local government authorities we hope to establish an airfield in the coming year that satisfies the needs of all recreational pilots. By joining the CRAA and lending your support you will be helping to revive flying activities in the region and establish Canberra as a centre for excellence in aviation.
